Browse Through Lower Manhattan in New York City and Find Reasonably Priced Lodgings

by Lilja Maijala

Bright lights, Broadway shows, and fascinating neighborhoods, among other points of interest, await you when you plan to spend a vacation in New York City. You don't have to stay in the city's renowned swanky uptown hotels if you cannot afford those high-end charges. There are many different types of affordable lodgings you can find in the city. So how about exploring the options you have for lodgings so that you can choose a place in the Big Apple that's not going to cost you a lot of money? Transportation to all points in the city is a breeze, with subways taking you all over town. So browse through New York City's downtown neighborhoods and find reasonably priced lodgings in those areas.

You don't want to miss visiting the city's Greenwich Village neighborhood, which is home to an artsy conclave of residents. They are a diverse mix of citizens. Liberal-minded folks live among millionaires and movie stars. Still holding on to the title of "1960s flower children," some young people habitually lounge about in historic Washington Park. Everyday musicians and other talented street entertainment abound throughout Greenwich Village. You can find lodgings in Greenwich Village that place you right in the middle of the village's diverse community.

Larchmont Hotel

Rooms in Greenwich Village's Larchmont Hotel cost between $119 and $145.00, which may sound pricey but really isn't expensive when compared to hotels uptown on fancy Fifth Avenue. The rooms in this hotel are small and come with a shared bathroom privilege. There are two full bathrooms on each floor, and there are only six rooms to each floor. Kitchenettes are available so that you can prepare your own meals. The neighborhood has many cozy restaurants. Standard grace and favors such as cotton robes, slippers, and free Wi-Fi, along with a continental breakfast, are offered at this hotel. If you ask around, you can find nice places to stay that are similar in ways to places such as The Baker House 1650.

Chelsea Neighborhood

A 10-minute walk from Times Square and Madison Square Garden, if you've just attended a New York Knicks basketball game, puts you at Highline Hotel, where rooms range from $98 to $194. Rooms run the gamut from shared dormitory-type to single rooms, specialty theme, and deluxe rooms. There's a rooftop terrace and garden that you can use when the weather is nice, but the hotel is four stories high and does not have an elevator. Restaurants are within walking distance, and preeminent city sandwich shops are nearby as well. Standard hotel favors await you at Highline Hotel.

Chelsea Food Market

While staying in the Chelsea area, don't forget to check out the Chelsea Food Market. It's a delightful gourmet-food experience. Chelsea market also boasts a wine vault shop and a Corkbuzz wine studio. Rounding out the area below the market lies an enchanting bar called The Tippler that is bound to strike your memory as a vision of the past.
