Finding The Right Dog-Friendly Apartment

by Lilja Maijala

If you're a dog owner and are getting ready to move to a new apartment, there are more factors to consider than someone who doesn't own a dog. With more and more apartment complexes becoming more accepting of dogs, there are features and factors to keep in mind ensuring you find the best apartment for both your dog and yourself. So, before you select an apartment, be sure that you find an apartment that offers:

Specific Areas For Dogs:

Renting an apartment from a complex that doesn't have designated dog areas can make your living situation a bit more difficult. By not having a dedicated dog area in your complex, you will be forced to travel to a nearby dog park each time that you want your dog to get exercise. This can be very time-consuming and difficult, which is why you will find it more enjoyable and easier to rent from a complex that offers dog areas, as this will allow your dog to play and be active with other dogs, all within your apartment complex.

Friendly Dog Fees:

Although more and more apartment complexes are allowing dogs, they may include a very hefty deposit or pet rent expense. Before you select an apartment, be sure that you understand what type of expenses are involved, as one complex may only charge a down payment, one may charge both a deposit and monthly rent, and other complexes may only charge a pet rent. These fees can vary tremendously, and can be much smaller if you only have to pay a down payment rather than both.

Dog-Friendly Apartment Units:

The layout of each apartment that you look at is important, especially when it comes to the patio design and layout. To make things easier, you may find it more convenient and more efficient to seek an apartment that offers wood or tile floors. This will allow you to clean up the messes caused by your dog much easier, as you won't have to worry about stains sticking into your carpet, which can lead to you losing your deposit. Also, finding an apartment with a large patio can make things much easier. This will allow you to create your own designated dog area, so your dog can have his or her own area of the house to eat and to potentially use the bathroom.

Keeping these factors in mind when shopping for your next apartment rental will not only make finding the right apartment easier, but will give you the confidence to commit to an apartment that you know will accommodate the needs for both yourself and your dog.
